Solving for the Values of Amperage and Wattage through a Meter
Ohm’s law can be explained by a formula which states that amperage– or the amount of current is equal voltage– or the electrical force divided by ohms– or the resistance in the circuit. This formula states that the relationship between the electrical current and the pressure of electricity is direct and the relationship of the resistance of the circuit to the electric current is indirect.
Though the ohm’s law, we have a formula that we can use to compute for the amperage and wattage of a device by using a meter. The meter that we will use for our computation is the multimeter.
The fist thing that we need to do is to turn off the power supply of the appliance’s circuit. After wards, you will now use your auto ranging multimeter. Before using it, you have to set its knob to the resistance setting which is symbolized by the Greek letter omega.
We will then use the multimeter’s negative probe to touch one of the terminals of the device. Then we will touch the other terminal with multimeter’s positive probe. Afterwards, we will wait for the multimeter’s read out. This read out is the value of the circuit’s resistance in terms of ohms.
The next step is to measure the voltage of the device. For us to measure this we need to change the multimeter’s setting to voltage. It is vital for us to check if the device is powered by an outlet or generator. If this is the case, we will put the voltage setting to AC or alternating current. If the device is powered by batteries, dynamo, solar panel, solar cell or transformer, then we need to put the setting in DC or direct current.
The next thing you need to do is to turn on the power source of the equipment. Then you have to place the mulitimeter’s positive probe to the positive terminal of the power supply. Afterwards, you have to place the negative probe of the multimeter to the negative terminal of the power supply. The multimeter will then have a reading, the value of the reading is the electrical pressure in terms of volts.
We now have to solve for the value of the amperage. By using ohm’s law we will compute for the value of the amperage using the read out of the multimeter. Volts divided by ohms equal to amperage or the total power which the equipment uses.
To get the wattage, you have to multiply the amperage by the value of the voltage and the resulting product is called the wattage or the power rating of the device. That is how you compute the value of amperage and wattage using a meter. You can now record these values for future use.
