Wikipedia defines “Information technology” as “the study, design, development, application, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware”. This basically pertains to all things mobile communications and computers.
Today, understanding IT and its functions is more important than ever. With the rapid growth in technology, we have no choice but to become inundated with the latest and greatest gadgets. Technology as a whole has pulled our society out of the Stone Age and into 2010. Technology has changed everything from the way we watch TV to how we buy food.
However, there is a down side. Unfortunately with more technology, there are more problems, and more of a need and desire to understand it. Luckily there are IT professionals to help us with the issues we don’t understand and to help us adapt to our rapidly growing technological society.
IT first arose in the early 90s with the expansion of the Internet and the use of home computers. The more computers that began to appear in living rooms and home offices, the more need and demand for IT professionals and staff increased. This has created the influx of technology we know today.
Cell phones and mobile communications were the first to become widely popular. The Internet became responsible for spearheading email, chatting, and social media networking sites. With these breakthroughs literally at our fingertips, we as a society became addicted to these cool new features.
As great as all this technology is, it doesn’t come without its challenges. While we are enjoying technology and all its benefits, some IT professionals work around the clock to make sure servers function and are backed up properly, to protect our systems from catching and spreading viruses or trojans, and to keep us up to date with the latest programs and applications. They also design websites, networking systems and set up databases.
Organizations cannot function today without cell phones and computers. In fact, no organization is even considered valuable without technology. As a result, millions of jobs have been created to meet the needs and demands of organizations that need a professional and knowledgeable IT staff to maintain their information systems.
It’s probably safe to say that we’ve all thought about what the future holds for our society. What new technological advances are coming down the pike? What will we think of next? Will the new gadget make our lives easier, or more difficult?
