Online Nursing Schools – What’s The Catch?
An online nursing school sounds like just the right solution for students who are frustrated by the traditional nursing school waiting lists. Going to school on your own time, making your own schedule, no annoying commutes, working and taking classes at the same time…it’s the ideal scenario for many a wanna-be nurse.
But why isn’t everyone rushing to enroll in an online program? Why do many still prefer to go to community colleges and state colleges and even costly private colleges?
Simple, there’s actually a catch.
The truth is, you can’t get into an online nursing school without first obtaining a related health care degree like one Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN), paramedic, or respiratory therapy.
This rule was established for a really valid reason. Student nurses must work under the direction of a trained registered nurse, who trains them and watches them as they interact with patients and push meds. Nurses who have only been taught online lack the necessary hands-on experience for them to be really capable carers
Online nursing school programs are best suited for those already have some experience in the health care field. And even then, the student will work with an area coordinator for local hospitals and health care facilities, supervised by a registered nurse employed by the online school. Studying can only get you so far as an aspiring nurse; practical, real world experience is an absolute must.
So, while an online degree program sounds ideal, there are some practical limitations. Those who have the prerequisite health care training will be able to advance their careers easily, opening up more opportunities for them, but unfortunately there is no way for a person without health care experience at all to get that RN degree solely through online education.
