Online Degrees Accelerated : Do Accelerated Degree Programs Have Any Obscure Disadvantages?
Accelerated programs and online education in general have seemingly taken the world of college learning by storm. Millions and millions of students are enrolled with these educational options, and they can provide a wealth of unique opportunities, but there are potential downsides to everything. Take a look at some of these potential downsides and drawbacks to accelerated degrees to see whether or not you’ll want to get started for yourself.
At the top of the list of potential drawbacks is that a faster schedule means more classes and more work in less time. You’ll be working hard, and you’ll be getting a lot done in a very short period of time.
For some people, this makes taking these programs very difficult. When you have a full-time job, you have a family and you have other responsibilities too, attending class at all can be hard, let alone doing it at a lightning quick speed. Therefore, you have to really consider if you’ll be able to handle the workload and move quickly ahead with a lot of work at the same time.
Another thing to consider with accelerated degrees is that by and large they are offered online. Today’s online bachelor degree programs are actually pretty amazing, and they offer an extremely helpful and engaging learning environment. With that said though, it’s still online and not in a classroom, and that’s something that can’t be completely replicated.
Another issue with online learning is that you’re totally accountable for itself. That’s not necessarily bad, but it means that you have to be the one that motivates yourself even when you don’t have a teacher over your back and you aren’t mandated to appear in a classroom once or twice per week.
Of course, that also means you need access to all of the right equipment in order to really thrive in your online class environment. You’ll need your own computer, the right kinds of software, fast Internet connection speeds, and a quiet place where you can comfortably study and learn. Not everyone has all of this, so this can be viewed as another potential disadvantage.
One last thing to consider as a downside to an accelerated program offered online is that simply put, not all types of programs translate perfectly to the world of online learning. It would be hard to learn how to repair a car without actually getting under the hood and doing it yourself, and no amount of book or video learning can replace that completely.
As you can see, despite all the hype and the buzz, accelerated degrees still aren’t going to be perfect for everyone. There are a handful of different potential disadvantages to be aware of, and it’s enough to make this something you’ll have to carefully consider. Still, despite all of the above, most people find this a convenient and accessible option that works for them.
