How To Study Paramedic Science At University
Courses in Paramedic Science and Paramedic Practise are available at a number of U.K. Universities. These courses differ and can be at Foundation , BSc or Honours degree level but all lead to registration with the HPC which allows you to practise as a paramedic upon qualification. To apply for any Paramedic Science Degree course you need to go through the UCAS system which can be done online via their website. There are also other routes for training to become a paramedic and these are covered in detail on this student paramedic website.
You will need certain qualifications in order to apply for a paramedic science degree These include 5 G.C.S.E.s at grade C of higher including maths, English and preferably a science subject. You?ll also need 2 A levels or the equivalent, again with reasonable grades and including science by preference.
Alternative qualifications are often considered especially for mature students. These must however demonstrate an ability to work at the same academic level and preferably show a scientific leaning. Examples might include Open University Credits, Baccalaureates or other recognised Level 3 qualifications.
Applications for paramedic science degree courses outweigh available places. Approx. 10 applicants are received for each place although in London this can be as high as 20. In order to be successful it is essential to have relevant work experience with the public and preferably in the area of healthcare.
This experience can be very varied and might include for example, part time work as a swimming pool lifeguard, working with the Red Cross, helping out at a local care home, volunteering to serve meals at a cancer hospice or even supporting a patient advice group on diabetes or heart disease.
Search the notice board & leaflet rack of your doctor?s surgery for information on any patient information or support groups that might run in your area and try to get involved. You may also get work experience at a G.P. surgery or a work shadow placement at your local hospital.
It is worth persisting as the importance of work experience cannot be over emphasised when applying for a Paramedic Science place. Commitment is also loked for so build up a track record by staying with your work placement for at least 3 months.
